What is Your Visibility Rating?
I still feel a need to expand on our prime goal and focus on our manufacture of Quality Energy Efficient Wooden Windows, Doors and Mouldings.
My question above relates to the role that windows play in a building's use of energy.
Windows are not like Walls and Insulation
Materials used for walls, roofs, ceilings and floors are insulated to resist the conduction of heat and are measured in R values. High values are more energy efficient.
Windows are very different from walls and ceilings.
Windows:
1. Let in light and allow people to see out. The visible transmittance rating for clear LowE glass is 82, so 82% of light comes through the glass
2. They interact with their environment in ways that insulation does not.
3. They react to outside air temperatures, sunlight and wind
4. They react to indoor air temperatures and occupant use
5. They are strongly affected by solar radiation and the airflow around them.
Therefore, the window industry measures their products in terms of Thermal Transmission or U Value. This takes into account the affect of the airflow around the window and the emissivity of the glass. Low values are more energy efficient.
A short term investment in an energy efficient home will bring long term savings in power bills, especially as forecasts indicate a dramatic increase in power costs over the next several years.
