More on LowE Glass
I find that interest in energy efficient windows is increasing especially in regard to LowE glass and more explanation of its benefits has been requested. I also want to emphasize the insulation value of wooden frames.
New Building Regulations relating to energy efficiency (SANS 10400 XA&SANS 204) include new and replacement windows and doors and it came into force on 10th November 2011.
LowE (Emissivity) refers to the ability of glass to suppress direct heat radiation and absorb indirect heat radiation. The glass is coated with a very thin layer of silver on the inside of the first of the two sheets of glass. We install glass in all the windows and doors we supply so you have the confidence in knowing it will be installed properly.
It is worth pointing out that heat radiation remains on the side of the glass it originated, the heat sources remain inside the home during winter months and it will keep the inside of the home warmer. In summer some of the heat is reflected away so it will keep the inside of the home cooler.
How does LowE glass work?
The effect of LowE glass is based on the angle of direct solar radiation
Due to the sun’s differing angles during summer and winter the LowE glass works well in all seasons. In summer, when the angle is direct, some heat is reflected back outside. In winter, when the sun’s angle is less direct, indirect heat is absorbed and reflected back into room. Being cool in the summer and warm in winter is a good thing.
Glass is a very good conductor of heat. It has a higher U value than most other building components. All building components need to be insulated for it to be energy efficient so windows and glass doors should not be left out of the equation because the end benefits are lower energy bills and a much more comfortable home to live in.
Please try this yourselves; In regard to the frames used for the glass, touch the inside and the outside of aluminium frames now that it is winter, you will find they are equally cold, yet when you touch the inside of wooden frames it is quite warm compared to the outside. I am sure you will agree the wooden frame is so much better insulated.
We are offering an economic way of installing energy efficient windows and doors in the Highveld
