The Municipal Plans Department asks the applicant (the Owner) to nominate a professional from one of the building services to become the Competent Person who will make sure all parts of the Building Regulations are complied with when construction plans are passed and put into effect. Once the person accepts, the responsibility rests with the Competent Person to act on behalf of the Owner. What does SANS 204 say about fenestration? There are two important Regulations 1. Architects must ensure that the manufacturer of the windows and doors has a SANS 613 Performance Certificate issued by AAAMSA on behalf of SAFIERA. This applies to every construction of residential or commercial building. This certificate ensures that the manufacturer has had his products tested independently and passed the minimum requirements for air tightness, water resistance and structural strength. KPJ has the required certificates as our products have been tested and in most cases far exceed the minimum requirement. 2. In order to conserve energy demand fenestration products must not exceed the Constants for Conductance ( U Value) -heat leaving the building and Solar Heat Gain - heat entering the building, on each floor of the building. To help manufacturers who have not thermally tested their products SANS 204 provides a default list of worst case U values and SHGCs that can be used to do the calculations. This lists covers several different glazing options for a) metal frames and b) wooden frames (wood offers the best values.) Thermal testing of products will signifantly reduce these U Values and SHGCs. KPJ has made a very large financial investment in getting products thermally tested and simulated. Several windows have been tested and we can offer clients much lower U values and SHGC than those in the default list. The importance of having products thermally tested is that all sizes of similarly constructed windows and doors can be simulated to give the whole range lower U Values and SHGCs. KPJ simulations make it much easier for architects to meet the Constants. How are Simulations performed? Simulations are done after the data is received from Hot Box thermal testing of windows and doors that include glazing. The model that is thermally tested is 1200mm x 1500mm and when similar structures are used for different sizes the data for each window and door is collected and the model is scaled to simulate U Value, SHGC, and Visual Transmission. It can take into account any type of glazing as well. The formulas used for simulations are taken from the NFRC.
