The subject under discussion was the New Building Regulations. We were informed that the NRCS (National Registrar Compulsory Specifications) has directed Municipalities to enforce the regulations. Municipalities have appointed Building Control Officers to carry out this function. It means that requirements will be inspected at the plans approval stage by a Competent Person appointed by the owner. Drawings will need to have energy efficiency details listed and contractors will need certificates from product manufacturers ready for inspection. FENESTRATION In regard to fenestration, manufacturers are required to comply with SANS 613 and supply the necessary certificate of compliance. In addition, it is the manufacturers' responsibility to be able to give architects assurance that they can supply windows and doors to their energy efficient specifications. U Values and SHGC for KPJ Products

U Values and SHGC of KPJ Products We have achieved great success with our standard single pane Premier range of Side, Top and Fixed windows achieving an A3 rating. The process is expensive with an outlay of R37000.00 to get the SANS 613 (Performance Test Certificate) and SANS 204 Rotatable Guarded Hot Box (RGHB) certification (Energy Rating Certificate) for a SINGLE product. The process of obtaining the U-factor (in W/m².K) is first to submit the product for RGHB test (which can only be done after obtaining SANS 613) then to have the results independently verified by simulation. Should the RGHB and simulation results be within 10% this is deemed acceptable and simulation of the ranges can be done. We are currently working closely with the simulators submitting samples of our seals, Meranti, types of treatment, and hardware so the simulation is as close as possible to the actual results. The simulation is also an expensive exercise and this depends on the complexity of the product. Costing ranges from R300.00 per item. Prices quoted for simulation of 200 windows is around R100 000.00. The SHGC is largely dependent on the GLASS, however Steel and Aluminium without a thermal break are generally a great Hi-Way for conductance increasing the overall SHGC. Thus Timber will give a better SHGC and the more timber there is the better the SHGC.

The Aim of the SHGC Constant

The Aim of the SHGC Constant SANS 204 describes several options for architects to reduce exposure of windows to solar radiation and uses the Constant to hold the designer to a window area limit in each cimatic zone. Radiation is the movement of heat as infrared energy through glass. The New Building Regulations require that the SHGC Constant must apply to the combined effect of the frame+glass. The SHGC CONSTANT for Johannesburg and environs is 0.15 and for Pretoria and environs it is 0.12. These figures represent the equivalent percentage of the net floor area of each storey of a building that can be exposed to solar radiation through windows. Without the product Thermal Test figures you have to use the worst case Table 6 in SANS 204 to calculate your plan against the Constant. For example, in the single occupancy building in Zone 2 shown in SANS 204 with a net floor area of 60 square meters only the equivalent of 12% or 7.2 square meters of window area per storey is allowed UNLESS you can reduce the exposure factor with a combination of better orientation, well placed shading and choose a product with a lower SHGC. KPJ wood shutters placed outside windows that are exposed to solar radiation will make a big contribution to meeting the Constant Thermal testing of frame+glass will show the real SHGC of the product. The resulting figure will depend on the type of frame and glass used and how well it prevents solar radiation from being transmitted through the window. The importance of having the Thermal Test figure is that the architect can choose the right product to maintain the goal of keeping the building bright and airy.
